Isabel is a talented and musical student. She has a perfect pitch and learns a lot of pieces by trusting her musical ear rather than looking at the notes. She can make a huge progress within a short period of time but she has to be highly motivated in order to do so. She likes music and playing the piano but I’m trying to make her more engaged into musical world by going to the concert, listening to different recordings of the same piece and working on the pieces (that she hasn’t been given) for her own pleasure.

Isabel, similarly to Oliver, was used to playing though the pieces from the beginning until the end a few times. For the last year we’ve been working on better ways to practice and lots of times we spent a part of a lesson on practising so that she knew what do when I’m not there. I’ve introduced her to ‘Improve your practice’ by Paul Harris, that she absolutely loved, and I could see that her practising involves tasks and methods used in the book. When it comes to sight-reading, it has always been very challenging for Isabel. She wasn’t used to playing easier pieces just for fun and everything she was doing involved ‘grading’ in the name. She found ‘Improve your sight-reading’ very helpful and after finishing the second grade, we  moved on to Grade 3. I aim to do at least one exercise with her during the lesson and she has to do two more by herself during the week.
